FOREST GATE
CAMPING
Please
note revised policy concerning acceptance of dogs on the site
Forest Gate
is a small, friendly camp-site run by Maureen and Dick Blakemore at Huntley on
the A40 between Gloucester and Ross-on-Wye (at the junction of the A4136). Our telephone and Fax number is 01452-831192
and our e-mail address is forestgate@huntley-glos.demon.co.uk.
Camping is
in the grounds of the former Victorian Rectory, surrounded by lovely countryside,
orchards and fields. The grounds occupy
over 3 acres and the site is licensed by the local authority for 25 units (a
unit being the space for a tent or a caravan).

Forest Gate The Camp site in High Summer (a dream?)
We have flush toilets, hot and cold water and electric
showers. There are electrical hook-ups and drinking water points around the
grounds and refuse is collected daily.
Fire extinguishers are also sited strategically for your protection. We have a small log cabin just at the
entrance to the site which acts as the Reception and as a very small shop
catering for basic needs - milk, bread, sweets, freezing ice-packs and so
on. Guests who have been with us before
will note that the entrance way to the site has been changed, so that all
traffic now turns left from the drive and there is no access to the house
itself. Reception is manned generally
from 0800 to 2000 hours (with a break for lunch) and there is an intercom by
which guests may contact us if there is no-one in the Reception during these
hours. Arrivals after hours should use
the intercom to let us know of your arrival.
Guests must arrive before 2230 hours in every case.
Pets are
always welcome at Forest Gate, but due to an unpleasant episode over the Easter
Bank Holiday, we have had to change our policy on accepting dogs. In future dogs will only accepted by
arrangement, will be restricted to one dog per unit during high season and Bank
Holidays, and no guard dogs, or dogs that think they are guard dogs, will be
accepted. Please telephone to arrange
acceptance of your dog. Dogs must be
kept on leads, but there are many open fields for their exercise close by
(watch out for sheep).

Caravans in Springtime Tents and daffodils
Your stay at Forest Gate will cost £7.00 per
adult per night and £3.50 per child; a
child is defined as being under fourteen.
Electrical hook-ups cost £3.50 a day or part-day. There is a charge of £5.00 per visit for a
gazebo/kitchen annex (a separate structure from the tent/caravan), and for the
growing trend in huge tents which occupy two pitches (one measuring 8.00m in
any direction) there is an extra charge of £5.00 per day; there is a small charge for day visitors to
the site of £1.50 per day per adult visitor.
It is not always necessary to book your stay at Forest Gate, but if you
are able to plan ahead it is always worthwhile giving us a telephone call,
especially as the weather gets warmer (!)
Additionally we have been full for some recent weekends (before the floods!). We don’t know why; there appears to be no one reason that we can
spot. This suggests we may well be full
during other summer weekends, thus reinforcing the need to book. Please remember that we never ‘cram’ people
in! We are a small, quiet camping site
and need to point out that it is a condition of stay that there is no noise on
the site after 1130 pm. When the site is
full, there is not enough space for ball games and similar activities, and all
campers are expected to ensure that their pleasures do not affect the
peacefulness of others. It is always
necessary to book a stay over a Bank Holiday and we will ask for a
non-refundable deposit for these periods.
Forest Gate
is at the gateway of the Royal Forest of Dean, ideal for walking and escaping
the crowds. The rivers Severn and Wye
form natural boundaries. Don’t forget
that the Severn Bore comes up the River Severn, only two miles or so away, many
times a year and is an amazing natural phenomenon: more details are available from the Tourist
Information Centre. We are 7 miles from
Gloucester with its beautiful cathedral, and Ross-on-Wye, a charming market
town, is 9 miles away. We are within
easy reach of the Cotswolds, the Malverns and the Black Hills, and the towns of
Cheltenham, Hereford and Tewkesbury are all worth a visit. Click

for directions by public transport.
There is
something for everyone. You can explore
historic castles, marvel at magnificent cathedrals, ramble along deserted
nature trails, take drives through picturesque countryside, canoe and fish in
safe waters and pony trek through beautiful woodlands. You can even have the satisfaction of picking
your own fruit - it's an abundant area for raspberries, strawberries, plums and
apples. There are iron-age caves, wild
life parks, a falconry centre, a maze and a steam centre for the railway
enthusiast. Refreshing products can be
sampled at nearby cider mills and vineyards: all in this still unspoiled corner
of England.
